BFDI Live Chat

\n```\n\nAdd CSS for online users.\n\nIn script.js:\n- Initialize WebsimSocket\n- Add presence update\n- Add room state subscription\n- Modify chat form submit to use room state\n- Modify donation form submit to use room state\n- Modify bot chat/donation logic to check peer count\n- Add render functions\n- Update online users display\n\nOne more thing: The current bot chat creates messages at random intervals. I need to modify `startChatting()` to check if there are other real users.\n\n```javascript\nfunction startChatting() {\n if (getRealPeerCount() > 0) {\n // Don't generate bot chat when real users are present\n setTimeout(startChatting, 3000);\n return;\n }\n createChatMessage();\n const randomInterval = Math.random() * 2500 + 500;\n setTimeout(startChatting, randomInterval);\n}\n```\n\nWait, but if I do this, when a second user joins, bot chat stops. When they leave, it resumes. Good.\n\nSimilarly for donations:\n```javascript\nfunction startDonations() {\n if (getRealPeerCount() > 0) {\n setTimeout(startDonations, 5000);\n return;\n }\n // generate donation\n}\n```\n\nActually, maybe allow bot donations occasionally even with real users? But keep it simple - stop them.\n\nNow, `getRealPeerCount()` should count peers excluding self.\n\n```javascript\nfunction getRealPeerCount() {\n return Object.keys(room.presence || {}).filter(id => id !== room.clientId).length;\n}\n```\n\nBut room.presence includes self. So peers excluding self = real users.\n\nNow, when user changes name, update presence and localStorage.\n\nAlso, when user first connects, update presence with name and color.\n\nFor colors: generate from clientId.\n\n```javascript\nuserCharacter.color = stringToColor(room.clientId);\n```\n\nBut the name can be changed. Color stays tied to clientId.\n\nActually, maybe color should be based on username so friends can recognize? But usernames can change and collide. ClientId is unique. Let's use clientId.\n\nFor the message data, include clientId, name, color, text, timestamp.\n\nWhen rendering a message from room state, use the stored color. If a user changes their name, old messages keep old name. That's fine.\n\nFor the online users display:\n```javascript\nfunction updateOnlineUsers() {\n const container = document.getElementById('online-users');\n const presences = Object.entries(room.presence || {})\n .filter(([id]) => id !== room.clientId)\n .map(([id, p]) => p);\n \n if (presences.length === 0) {\n container.textContent = 'Only you are here';\n return;\n }\n \n const names = presences.map(p => p.name || 'Anonymous').join(', ');\n container.textContent = `${presences.length} online: ${names}`;\n}\n```\n\nActually, I should include self too. \"You, Gelatin, Blocky\".\n\nLet me include all presences.\n\n```javascript\nfunction updateOnlineUsers() {\n const container = document.getightById('online-users');\n const presences = Object.entries(room.presence || {})\n .sort(([idA], [idB]) => idA === room.clientId ? -1 : 1)\n .map(([id, p]) => id === room.clientId ? `You (${p.name})` : p.name);\n \n if (presences.length === 0) {\n container.textContent = 'Connecting...';\n return;\n }\n \n container.textContent = `Online: ${presences.join(', ')}`;\n}\n```\n\nNow, the tricky part: when rendering messages, the local user's messages should have the user-message class. Currently user messages are detected by isUserMessage flag. In the synced data, I can check if msg.clientId === room.clientId.\n\nLet me rewrite addMessageToChat to accept a message object:\n\n```javascript\nfunction renderChatMessage(msg) {\n const isUser = msg.clientId === room.clientId;\n const messageElement = document.createElement('div');\n messageElement.classList.add('chat-message');\n if (isUser) messageElement.classList.add('user-message');\n \n const usernameSpan = document.createElement('span');\n usernameSpan.classList.add('username');\n usernameSpan.style.color = msg.color;\n usernameSpan.textContent = msg.name + ':';\n \n const messageSpan = document.createElement('span');\n messageSpan.textContent = ` ${msg.text}`;\n \n messageElement.appendChild(usernameSpan);\n messageElement.appendChild(messageSpan);\n \n return messageElement;\n}\n```\n\nAnd for donations:\n\n```javascript\nfunction renderDonationMessage(donation) {\n const donationElement = document.createElement('div');\n donationElement.classList.add('donation-message');\n donationElement.innerHTML = `\n

\n $\"coin\"$ \n ${donation.name} donated ${donation.amount}!\n

\n \"${donation.message}\"\n

\n `;\n return donationElement;\n}\n```\n\nThen renderAllMessages:\n\n```javascript\nfunction renderAllMessages() {\n chatMessagesContainer.innerHTML = '';\n \n const syncedMessages = Object.entries(room.roomState?.chatMessages || {}).map(([id, msg]) => ({\n type: 'chat',\n timestamp: msg.timestamp,\n data: msg\n }));\n \n const syncedDonations = Object.entries(room.roomState?.donationMessages || {}).map(([id, don]) => ({\n type: 'donation',\n timestamp: don.timestamp,\n data: don\n }));\n \n const localChats = localBotMessages.map(msg => ({\n type: 'chat',\n timestamp: msg.timestamp,\n data: msg,\n isLocal: true\n }));\n \n const localDons = localBotDonations.map(don => ({\n type: 'donation',\n timestamp: don.timestamp,\n data: don,\n isLocal: true\n }));\n \n const all = [...syncedMessages, ...syncedDonations, ...localChats, ...localDons];\n all.sort((a, b) => b.timestamp - a.timestamp);\n \n all.forEach(item => {\n if (item.type === 'chat') {\n chatMessagesContainer.appendChild(renderChatMessage(item.data));\n } else {\n chatMessagesContainer.appendChild(renderDonationMessage(item.data));\n }\n });\n}\n```\n\nWait, for local bot messages, I need to store them with clientId, name, color, text, timestamp. The clientId can be a fake one or room.clientId? Better to use a fake bot clientId so they don't show as user messages. Or use the actual bot character's name. Since these are local-only, it doesn't matter. I'll use bot character's name as clientId-like identifier.\n\nActually, let me store local bot messages with a fake clientId like `bot-${character.name}` so they never match room.clientId.\n\nFor local bot donations, similar.\n\nNow, in createChatMessage, push to localBotMessages and call renderAllMessages. But renderAllMessages re-renders everything, which is fine for small message counts.\n\nHowever, re-rendering on every bot message might cause flicker or scroll issues. But since we're sorting and appending, and container uses flex-direction column-reverse, the visual should be stable.\n\nActually, the issue is that with column-reverse, messages appear from bottom to top. Newest first. If we sort descending and append, the newest will be at the top of the flex container, which visually appears at the bottom? Wait, flex-direction: column-reverse means the flex-start is at the bottom. So the first child (newest) appears at the bottom, last child appears at the top. That's reversed from normal. With prepend, newest goes to bottom. With append, newest goes to top. Current code uses prepend to put new messages at the bottom.\n\nIn renderAllMessages with column-reverse, if I append in descending order (newest first), the newest message will be appended first and appear at the top of the container (which is the visual top in column-reverse?). Wait, in column-reverse, the first item is placed at the bottom, subsequent items above it. So append order: first appended = oldest = appears at top, last appended = newest = appears at bottom. Hmm.\n\nLet me think again. With column-reverse, the main axis is reversed. In normal column, items flow top to bottom. In column-reverse, items flow bottom to top. So:\n- First child is at the bottom\n- Last child is at the top\n\nIf I append items in ascending order (oldest to newest):\n- Oldest appended first → at bottom\n- Newest appended last → at top\nThis means newest at top, which is opposite of current behavior.\n\nIf I append in descending order (newest to oldest):\n- Newest appended first → at bottom\n- Oldest appended last → at top\nThis matches current behavior (newest at bottom).\n\nCurrent code uses prepend which puts newest at the beginning of child list, and in column-reverse, first child is at bottom. Same result.\n\nSo in renderAllMessages, sort descending (newest first) and append. Good.\n\nNow, when new messages arrive, renderAllMessages clears and re-renders. The scroll position might reset. To preserve scroll, I can check if user was scrolled to bottom before re-render and restore. But this is complex. Given the chat auto-scrolls to show new messages, maybe it's OK if it scrolls to bottom.\n\nActually, since container uses flex-direction: column-reverse, the default scroll position is at the bottom (showing newest). After clearing and re-rendering, scroll should naturally be at bottom. Good.\n\nNow, the local bot messages: I need to maintain arrays and prune them.\n\n```javascript\nconst localBotMessages = [];\nconst localBotDonations = [];\nconst MAX_LOCAL_MESSAGES = 50;\n\nfunction addLocalBotMessage(character, text) {\n localBotMessages.push({\n clientId: `bot-${character.name}`,\n name: character.name,\n color: character.color,\n text,\n timestamp: Date.now()\n });\n if (localBotMessages.length > MAX_LOCAL_MESSAGES) localBotMessages.shift();\n renderAllMessages();\n}\n```\n\nSimilar for donations.\n\nBut `createChatMessage` currently adds directly to DOM. I need to refactor it to add to localBotMessages.\n\nActually, I can make `createChatMessage` call `addLocalBotMessage`.\n\nFor `createDonationMessage`, it currently does a lot: adds to DOM, plays sound, Firey reaction, alert, reactions. For local bot donations, I'll have them add to local array and trigger local effects.\n\nBut wait, if multiple users are connected, each client generating local bot donations with alerts and sounds could be chaotic. So I'll only generate bot donations when alone. Good.\n\nLet me refactor createChatMessage and createDonationMessage to push to local arrays.\n\nActually, for createDonationMessage, the function does these side effects:\n1. Create donation DOM element\n2. Play sound\n3. Firey speaks\n4. Show donation alert\n5. Trigger chat reactions\n6. Trim chat\n\nIf I move to local array, effects 1 and 6 are handled by renderAllMessages. Effects 2-5 should still happen when donation is created. But if multiple clients are connected and somehow bot donations run, we'd have multiple alerts. Since we stop bot donations when peers > 1, it's fine. But the function might be called when a synced donation arrives. For synced donations, we shouldn't re-trigger Firey reaction or alert on every client... or should we?\n\nActually, for synced real donations, I think every client should see the alert and hear the sound and see Firey react. So when a synced donation appears in room state, trigger the effects. But this means if 5 clients are connected, the donation was made by 1 client, and all 5 clients will detect the new donation in room state and trigger effects. That's fine actually - it's a shared experience. The sound might overlap but that's OK.\n\nWait, but the donation message in chat should only appear once per donation. If all 5 clients add it to room state, it's one donation with one message. Effects are triggered locally by each client. Good.\n\nBut there's a subtlety: when the donating client adds the donation to room state, it will also trigger its own render and effects. That's fine.\n\nTo handle synced donation effects, in subscribeRoomState, I can detect new donations and trigger effects. But that's complex. Simpler: when user submits donation, add to room state AND trigger effects locally. For other clients, when they see the new donation in room state, they trigger effects.\n\nTo avoid double effects for the donating client, I can include the sender clientId in the donation and skip effects if it's from self (since self already triggered them).\n\n```javascript\nroom.subscribeRoomState((state) => {\n const donations = state.donationMessages || {};\n // Find donations we haven't processed\n Object.entries(donations).forEach(([id, donation]) => {\n if (!processedDonations.has(id)) {\n processedDonations.add(id);\n if (donation.clientId !== room.clientId) {\n playSound('/donation.mp3');\n fireySpeaks(`Whoa! Thanks for the ${donation.amount} coins, ${donation.name}!`, null, false);\n showDonationAlert(donation.name, donation.color, donation.amount, donation.message);\n }\n }\n });\n renderAllMessages();\n});\n```\n\nThis is cleaner. Maintain a Set of processed donation IDs.\n\nSimilarly for chat messages, we don't need special effects, just render.\n\nBut for the user's own chat message, the current code has a chance for Firey to react. I should keep that local. When user sends message, add to room state, and locally roll for Firey reaction.\n\nFor other users' messages, maybe Firey shouldn't react to avoid chaos. Or could have a small chance. Keep it simple: only react to user's own messages.\n\nOK, let me structure this:\n\n1. Initialize room\n2. Update presence with name and color\n3. Subscribe to presence to update online users list\n4. Subscribe to room state to:\n - Process new synced donations (effects)\n - Render all messages\n5. Chat form: add to roomState.chatMessages, local Firey reaction chance\n6. Donation form: add to roomState.donationMessages, local effects\n7. Bot chat/donations: only when alone, add to local arrays\n8. createChatMessage refactored to addLocalBotMessage\n9. createDonationMessage refactored to addLocalBotDonation\n\nFor createDonationMessage's chat reactions (other bots reacting to donation), these are local bot messages. Add them via addLocalBotMessage.\n\nSimilarly for user chat reactions from bots.\n\nNow, about Firey reactions to donations: In createDonationMessage (bot), Firey speaks. In user donation, Firey speaks. In synced donation (other user), Firey speaks via subscription. Good.\n\nFor bot chat reactions to donations and user chats, these are local bot messages. Add to local array.\n\nNow, I also need to trim room state messages. Every time we add, check if > 100 and trim.\n\nLet me write the code.\n\nActually, I realize there's a potential issue with room state keys. If two users send messages at the same millisecond, keys could collide. Using `${timestamp}-${clientId}` ensures uniqueness.\n\nFor trimming, I need to be careful. If user A trims and deletes message from user B, is that OK? Room state is shared, anyone can modify. It's fine.\n\nBut if multiple clients try to trim simultaneously, could cause issues. To reduce conflict, only the client that just added a message and caused the overflow should trim.\n\n```javascript\nfunction addSyncedChatMessage(text) {\n const timestamp = Date.now();\n const id = `${timestamp}-${room.clientId}`;\n room.updateRoomState({\n chatMessages: {\n [id]: {\n clientId: room.clientId,\n name: userCharacter.name,\n color: userCharacter.color,\n text,\n timestamp\n }\n }\n });\n \n // Trim only if we're the one who added\n const messages = room.roomState?.chatMessages || {};\n const count = Object.keys(messages).length;\n if (count > 100) {\n trimSyncedMessages();\n }\n}\n```\n\nHmm, but room.roomState might not be updated immediately. The trim might happen before the new message is reflected. This is tricky.\n\nMaybe use a timeout or just let messages accumulate and trim periodically.\n\n```javascript\nsetInterval(() => {\n trimSyncedMessages();\n}, 10000);\n```\n\nOr simpler, don't trim. The chat container limits DOM to 150, but room state keeps growing. For a demo, probably fine. But to be safe, I'll add a trim on an interval.\n\nActually, let me add trim after a short delay:\n\n```javascript\nfunction addSyncedChatMessage(text) {\n // ... add message\n setTimeout(trimSyncedMessages, 100);\n}\n```\n\nThis gives time for the state to sync.\n\nOK, I think I have a plan. Let me also consider the case where WebsimSocket might not be available (e.g., running outside websim). I should handle that gracefully. The code should still work in single-player mode if room fails.\n\nActually, the prompt implies this is for websim. But to be safe, I'll wrap room initialization in try/catch and provide fallback.\n\n```javascript\nlet room = null;\nlet roomInitialized = false;\n\nasync function initRoom() {\n if (typeof WebsimSocket === 'undefined') {\n console.warn('WebsimSocket not available, running in single-player mode');\n return;\n }\n room = new WebsimSocket();\n try {\n await room.initialize();\n roomInitialized = true;\n // ... setup\n } catch (err) {\n console.error('Failed to initialize room:', err);\n }\n}\n```\n\nThen in functions that use room, check roomInitialized.\n\nBut this complicates the code. For now, I'll assume WebsimSocket is available. But I'll add a check just in case.\n\nLet me also think about the `userCharacter` color. Currently it's set to #f05a28. I'll generate it from clientId after room init. But the name input shows \"You\" initially. After room init, update userCharacter.color and presence.\n\nBut room init is async. The chat form might be used before init. To handle this, I'll initialize room at the top and await it before setting up event listeners? But awaiting at module top level is fine with top-level await if the script is module.\n\nThe current script is type=\"module\", so I can use top-level await.\n\n```javascript\nconst room = new WebsimSocket();\nawait room.initialize();\n```\n\nBut if WebsimSocket isn't defined, this throws. I'll do:\n\n```javascript\nlet room;\nlet roomInitialized = false;\n\nasync function initMultiplayer() {\n if (typeof WebsimSocket === 'undefined') return;\n room = new WebsimSocket();\n await room.initialize();\n roomInitialized = true;\n \n userCharacter.color = stringToColor(room.clientId);\n room.updatePresence({\n name: userCharacter.name,\n color: userCharacter.color\n });\n \n room.subscribePresence(() => updateOnlineUsers());\n room.subscribeRoomState((state) => {\n processNewDonations(state);\n renderAllMessages();\n });\n \n updateOnlineUsers();\n renderAllMessages();\n}\n\nawait initMultiplayer();\n```\n\nSince the rest of the code uses room, I need to make sure functions check if room exists.\n\nFor functions like `addSyncedChatMessage`:\n```javascript\nfunction addSyncedChatMessage(text) {\n if (roomInitialized) {\n // add to room state\n } else {\n // fallback: add as local message\n addLocalBotMessage({ name: userCharacter.name, color: userCharacter.color }, text);\n }\n}\n```\n\nHmm, this is getting complex. For simplicity, I'll assume WebsimSocket is available. The environment is websim after all.\n\nBut I want the code to be robust. Let me use a pattern where room is initialized and if it fails, we fall back to local-only mode.\n\nActually, let me think about the module structure. I can put the multiplayer logic behind checks.\n\nLet me write the code now.\n\nOne issue: the chat form currently calls addMessageToChat(userCharacter, message, true). I need to replace this with the new system.\n\nAnother issue: `createDonationMessage` (bot) currently creates DOM directly. I need to refactor.\n\nLet me write the refactored functions.\n\n```javascript\n// Local ephemeral bot messages\nconst localBotMessages = [];\nconst localBotDonations = [];\nconst processedDonationIds = new Set();\nconst MAX_LOCAL_MESSAGES = 50;\n\nfunction addLocalChatMessage(character, text, isUser = false) {\n localBotMessages.push({\n clientId: isUser ? (room?.clientId || 'local-user') : `bot-${character.name}`,\n name: isUser ? userCharacter.name : character.name,\n color: isUser ? userCharacter.color : character.color,\n text,\n timestamp: Date.now()\n });\n if (localBotMessages.length > MAX_LOCAL_MESSAGES) {\n localBotMessages.shift();\n }\n renderAllMessages();\n}\n```\n\nWait, I don't need isUser for local messages. User messages go to room state. Local messages are only bots.\n\n```javascript\nfunction addLocalChatMessage(character, text) {\n localBotMessages.push({\n clientId: `bot-${character.name}`,\n name: character.name,\n color: character.color,\n text,\n timestamp: Date.now()\n });\n if (localBotMessages.length > MAX_LOCAL_MESSAGES) localBotMessages.shift();\n renderAllMessages();\n}\n```\n\nFor createChatMessage:\n\n```javascript\nfunction createChatMessage() {\n const character = getRandomElement(characters);\n let messageText;\n const videoIsActive = isVideoActive();\n\n if (character.name === 'Bubble' && Math.random() < 0.6) {\n messageText = 'Yoylecake!';\n } else if (character.name === 'Rocky') {\n messageText = '*bleh*';\n } else if (character.name === 'Teardrop') {\n messageText = '...';\n } else if (character.name === 'Woody' && Math.random() < 0.5) {\n messageText = \"Waaah!\";\n } else {\n if (videoIsActive) {\n messageText = getRandomElement(videoReactionChatMessages);\n } else {\n messageText = getRandomElement(idleChatMessages);\n }\n }\n \n addLocalChatMessage(character, messageText);\n}\n```\n\nFor createDonationMessage:\n\n```javascript\nfunction createDonationMessage() {\n const potentialDonors = characters.filter(c => !['Teardrop', 'Rocky', 'Bubble', 'Woody'].includes(c.name));\n const donor = getRandomElement(potentialDonors);\n const amount = Math.floor(Math.random() * 491) + 10;\n const messageText = getRandomElement(donationMessages);\n\n addLocalDonation({\n clientId: `bot-${donor.name}`,\n name: donor.name,\n color: donor.color,\n amount,\n message: messageText,\n timestamp: Date.now()\n });\n\n playSound('/yeah.mp3');\n fireySpeaks(`Whoa! Thanks for the ${amount} coins, ${donor.name}!`, null, false);\n showDonationAlert(donor.name, donor.color, amount, messageText);\n\n const numberOfReactions = Math.floor(Math.random() * 3) + 2;\n for (let i = 0; i < numberOfReactions; i++) {\n setTimeout(() => {\n const potentialReactors = characters.filter(c => c.name !== donor.name);\n const reactingCharacter = getRandomElement(potentialReactors);\n let reactionText = getRandomElement(donationReactionMessages);\n reactionText = reactionText.replace('{donor}', donor.name);\n addLocalChatMessage(reactingCharacter, reactionText);\n }, 800 + i * (Math.random() * 800 + 400));\n }\n}\n\nfunction addLocalDonation(donation) {\n localBotDonations.push(donation);\n if (localBotDonations.length > 20) localBotDonations.shift();\n renderAllMessages();\n}\n```\n\nFor user donation:\n\n```javascript\ndonationForm.addEventListener('submit', (e) => {\n e.preventDefault();\n const amount = parseInt(document.getElementById('donation-amount').value);\n const message = document.getElementById('donation-message').value.trim();\n \n if (amount && amount > 0) {\n if (roomInitialized) {\n const id = `${Date.now()}-${room.clientId}`;\n room.updateRoomState({\n donationMessages: {\n [id]: {\n clientId: room.clientId,\n name: userCharacter.name,\n color: userCharacter.color,\n amount","page_description","cursor","eyJpZCI6ImZzN2RvdDAzdWJxNmFpMDR0cmxmIn0","token","included",[],"about",{"_200":-5},"parent","routes/browser/layout","actionData","errors"]
