What is a Herman Ring?

A Herman Ring is a closed, doubly-connected component of the Fatou set on which the function is analytically conjugate to an irrational rotation of the standard unit annulus. Named after mathematician Michael Herman, they represent stable circular structures in complex dynamical orbits.

The Norton Formulation

Physicist and artist Alan Norton explored complex multi-cycle Herman rings using complex rational functions. By taking a periodic 2-cycle ring system:

g(z) = z(z^p + a) / (c z^p + 1)

and multiplying it by a perturbation function:

h(z) = (z^p + b) / (z^p + d)

the system replicates, replacing single ring boundaries with complex multiple cyclic nested Herman rings. For $p=3$, it generates a 6-cycle system. For $p=4$, it yields 8-cycles, resulting in gorgeous \"writhing\" boundaries.
