this preset-loading error. It seems the browser environment doesn't like how I'm trying to register the 'env' preset. The specific error message points to a problem with the relative path used for loading the preset. I'm digging into how Babel handles presets in a browser context.\n\n\n**Examining the Config**\n\nI'm now focusing on the Babel configuration within `index.html`. It seems the issue stems from how I'm registering and using the \"env\" and \"react\" presets within a standalone browser context. The error suggests that it might be an issue with how the standalone build resolves dependencies during preset loading, especially when I explicitly configure the \"env\" preset with `modules: false`. I'm also considering the `react/jsx-dev-runtime` import failure. This probably means that React runtime automatic import is trying but failing due to the absence of a bundler. It appears that the recent attempt to resolve this by setting `runtime: \"classic\"` in the Babel config has now introduced a new issue.\n\n\n**Simplifying the Configuration**\n\nI think the best path forward is to simplify the HTML and the Babel configuration. I'm going to remove the custom preset and rely on Babel's defaults using `data-presets=\"react, env\"`. The error is still pointing to the inability to load the \"env\" preset, likely because of how it resolves in the browser context. I need to make sure `React` is available in the global scope. Let's try sticking to classic runtime.\n\n\n**Investigating the 'env' Preset**\n\nI'm now investigating the \"env\" preset loading issue. The error message makes me think the way I'm specifying `modules: false` is the problem. Maybe it's causing Babel to look for a plugin file in the browser environment, which isn't available in this standalone setup. To fix this, I'm thinking of creating a cleaner setup for `index.html`. My approach includes explicitly defining `React` as a global and properly configuring Babel for the classic runtime. I need to get the HTML right.\n\n\n**Debugging the Babel Setup**\n\nI'm now revisiting the configuration approach. The goal is to make `app.jsx` a module. Using `data-type=\"module\"` seems to preserve ES modules during Babel compilation. The current hurdle is the React runtime, which is causing some confusion. I'm focusing on simplifying the Babel configuration in the `` section, aiming to resolve the previous runtime error, and trying to eliminate the necessity of using `registerPreset` since it's causing unresolved preset names. The error is probably coming from the `import { jsxDEV } from \"react/jsx-dev-runtime\"` statement. I'll test configuring the \"react\" preset directly.\n\n\n**Resolving the React Runtime**\n\nI've been thinking about getting `react/jsx-dev-runtime` to work. I'm considering using an import map entry to fix the import error without complex Babel configuration, but the UMD build of React available does not support importing ESM modules. It only has `window.React`. Since I am using a UMD build, I must use classic JSX transform through `React.createElement` . My prior approach, like the custom preset with `env`, failed. Now, I am exploring removing `env` and keeping the `react` preset alone to see if that resolves the issue.\n\n\n**Streamlining the Approach**\n\nI'm now zeroing in on a straightforward solution, aiming to ditch the complex Babel configurations. The plan is to configure Babel directly within the script tag, leaning on `data-presets=\"react\"` and leveraging `esm.sh` for the React dependency. I'll test transforming a script tag with the simplest, most direct setup. I want to see if `Babel.transform` can operate on a single object in the script tag, and keep things globally accessible.\n\n\n**Switching the Runtime**\n\nI'm now thinking I can solve the problem by configuring the Babel classic runtime and simplifying things. The \"env\" preset still seems to be the main blocker. I'll define presets with `Babel.availablePresets` to avoid the preset loading issue. Alternatively, I can use an import map with full ESM React to handle `react/jsx-runtime` dependency, avoiding UMD entirely. I think I'll make the switch to full ESM.\n\n\n**Modernizing the Imports**\n\nI'm now implementing the update by removing the UMD scripts for React and integrating an import map for `react`, `react-dom/client`, and `react/jsx-runtime`. My plan is to configure Babel with `data-type=\"module\"` to preserve the import statements while transforming JSX. The updated import map should handle the imports required by the Babel generated code, ensuring everything works with the browser. The approach avoids UMD and uses standard ESM modules.\n\n\n**Updating the Module**\n\nI'm now focusing on refining the `app.jsx` module. I need to update the imports to align with the new ESM setup. Specifically, I'll update the component to correctly use imports for `React` and `ReactDOM`, and make sure everything is wired up to work with the updated import map. The goal is to get the component to run without any global dependency assumptions.\n\n\n**Revising the Imports**\n\nI'm now streamlining the module imports in `app.jsx` to ensure compatibility with the ESM setup. The goal is to make all imports explicit and compliant with the import map. I will be carefully reviewing the changes to `index.html`. My focus is to confirm that `WebsimSocket` will indeed be globally available, so the script can load without issues.\n\n\n**Finalizing the Module**\n\nI'm now revising my import statements to align with the ESM setup. The goal is to ensure a fully functional module, so I'm importing `React` as the default and `createRoot` directly from `react-dom/client`. I'll update the component and change `ReactDOM.createRoot` to `createRoot`, ensuring all React 18 hooks are working correctly.\n\n\n**Integrating the Import Map**\n\nI've added the import map entries for `react/jsx-runtime` and `react/jsx-dev-runtime` to handle these specific dependencies, as well as fixing the \"Babel preset\" error. I'm now integrating this within my existing setup to make sure things like `ReactDOM` imports work as expected.\n\n\n**Integrating the Configuration**\n\nI'm now integrating the updated Babel config. The previous attempt with `react/jsx-dev-runtime` and `react/jsx-runtime` dependencies showed the value of an import map. I will use the import map with the `react-classic` preset in my configuration. This approach should solve the loading problems.\n\n\n\n**Implementing the Module**\n\nI'm now putting everything together. The module updates are complete, with explicit imports of `React` and `createRoot`. I'm making sure `WebsimSocket` loads properly, given the global scope. This also includes updating the `ReactDOM` import to `createRoot`, confirming compatibility.\n\n\n\n**Finalizing the Render**\n\nI'm now making final adjustments to the rendering process. My last step is to ensure that the `render()` call works correctly with the ESM setup. I need to make sure the app renders without any unexpected errors. This is the last step to ensure a functional app.\n\n\n\n\nindex.html\n```index.html\n```\n\napp.jsx\n```app.jsx\n```\n\napp.jsx\n```app.jsx\n```\n\nSummary: Switched from UMD React to ESM React using Import Maps to resolve Babel preset and runtime errors.
